If this show has a cousin, it’s The Grammy’s

- Harvey Weinstein aims high for his new show, the WORLD DANCE AWARDS, a ‘Game-Changer Show’ that he is convinced will be a ratings blockbuster and become a staple of the TV event calendar like the The Oscar and The Grammy’s.

The dance genre has proved to be a wide-ranging audience magnate with shows like ‘Dancing With The Stars’, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and ‘So You Know You Can Dance’.  But whereas these have all been national casting/competition shows, Weinstein takes the award show route with his ‘Grammy’s for Dance’ kind-of-programme.

Together with Irish stepdance superstar Michael Flatley, Weinstein is scouting and honouring the best dancers across categories like Best Dance in Film, Best Dance in Music Video and Best Live Dance Show.  The date for the inaugural awards is yet to be set, but Weinstein noted it would be after the Oscars and Grammys, most likely around April/May. “What really works today is something ‘Live’ – something results oriented.”, said Weinstein. “We’ve seen Sport events and music event like The Grammy’s grow year to year. The audience loves something performance oriented and topical.”  Immediacy is the hook to live television, he said “people just never know what’s going to happen next.”

Asked about his take on ‘Digital’, the Hollywood veteran said that at the end of the day it is all about content. “Good stories rule anything.”
